Recognized by Time magazine as one of Americas
50 outstanding leaders under age 40, Dr. Kevin
Vigilante is a true activist, dedicating much
of his time and medical talent to the medically
under- served. He has cared for poor, minority
women who suffer from drug addiction and the effects
of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Having
received his B.A. in Philosophy from Johns Hopkins
University, Dr. Vigilante earned his Medical Degree
from Cornell University in 1982, did his residency
at Yale, and got his masters in Public Health
at Harvard in 1991.
Dr.
Vigilante has directed much of his work to helping
at-risk, inner-city women and children, including
establishing RISE, a foundation that provides
education in inner-city private and parochial
middle schools to children of incarcerated women.
Dr. Vigilante has been a member of the Board of
Directors of the Rape Crisis Center of Rhode Island,
helping to extend the Centers services to
sexually abused children. He also cares for HIV
positive women and has launched an HIV prevention
program for female prisoners at the Rhode Island
State Prison.
Dr.
Vigilantes humanitarian work has also extended
past our countrys borders. In 1991 Dr. Vigilante
traveled to Romania, at his own expense, to work
with handicapped children in a Romanian orphanage.
He has also conducted dangerous human rights investigations
in the Sudan, where he documented the existence
of a slave trade. He submitted testimony on his
findings to the U.S. Congress and to the United
Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva.
Board
certified in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine,
Dr. Vigilante currently resides in Rhode Island,
where he is a Clinical Associate Professor of
Medicine at Brown University. A lover of food,
Dr. Vigilante continues to work with Christopher
Martins, a well-known restaurant in New Haven,
Connecticut, that he founded with his brother
in the early 1980s. Not just a favorite
neighborhood landmark and pub, Christopher Martins
has an ongoing outreach relationship with the
local community in feeding the homeless and annually
collecting toys for needy children at Christmas.
Mary
Flynn is a Ph.D. in nutrition who has done pioneering
research on the failure of low fat diets and the
negative effects of low fat diets on HDL and Triglycerides.
She is a Brown University faculty member with
an active clinical nutritional practice.
Mary
Melie, master chef at Christopher Martin's Restaurant,
served as the culinary consultant and kitchen
tester for this book.
