“Irrational” is often the only word to describe the financial markets. Down one week, up the next—the stock market is a veritable roller coaster. It takes investors (and their money) to dizzying heights, through frightening lows, and leaves them wondering—is it possible for anyone to navigate the seemingly illogical twists and turns of the stock market and still come out ahead?

Fortunately, the answer is yes. In Investing In One Lesson, investment guru Dr. Mark Skousen clearly reveals the reasons for the unpredictable nature of the stock market and describes the economic, psychological, and even irrational factors that often blindside investors. Most importantly, Dr. Skousen explains why otherwise successful professionals so often fail at investing. Clarifying everything from how and why a company goes public to the effect of macroeconomic and international events on a company’s stock price, Dr. Skousen offers reassurance and reason to bewildered beginning investors and frustrated seasoned investors alike. Lifting back the veil of perplexity and confusion that surrounds the workings of the stock market, Dr. Skousen explains:

  • Why good news for the economy is often bad news for the stock market
  • Why stocks of old, established companies in shrinking industries tend to be a better investment than shares in rapidly growing firms in cutting-edge fields
  • Why stock prices can suddenly skyrocket or collapse—regardless of market fundamentals
  • Why initial public offerings often enrich insiders at the expense of the majority of investors
  • How Wall Street is like a giant casino—and how it isn’t

Investing In One Lesson is an idiot-proof guide to the stock market, complete with a single strategy for avoiding the pitfalls of “irrational exuberance.” As Skousen reminds all investors: Wall Street is not Main Street—but you can succeed once you know the difference.
