Why Do Americans, and Particularly Westerners, Feel Less Free?
What Happened to Our Constitutional Liberties and the Rule of Law?
Congress enacts ambiguous statutes demanded by radical groups; federal bureaucrats implement those laws as the groups demand; then, out-of-control activist judges, in lawsuits brought by those groups, interpret the laws as those groups insist. Meanwhile, others in Congress, the Executive, and the Judiciary do nothing!
The results are frustratingly infuriating, frightening, and flat wrong: John Shuler of Montana killed a grizzly bear in self-defense, then feds prosecuted him for eight years using the Endangered Species Act. Bobby Unser nearly died in a blizzard on a snowmobile trip, then feds charged him with the “crime” of accidentally entering a wilderness. John Bernt’s mining claims were voided when bureaucrats back-dated documents—then they and government lawyers and judges lied about it. Clinton officials demanded that western counties gerrymander voting districts to ensure election of minorities, then Bush lawyers joined in. Clinton closed millions of acres by designating them as monuments (and thus off-limits to humans) in violation of federal law—then Bush lawyers defended Clinton’s actions. Officials barred the public from federal lands American Indians call “sacred” while all signs of Judeo-Christian religion are forbidden.
With energy prices soaring, bureaucrats and judges closed gas-rich lands after some people said development would cause them “psychological harm.” Congress orders the seizure of private land for recreation, but when land owners seek “just compensation,” federal lawyers stonewall. With the Supreme Court on the verge of ending government racial quotas, Bush lawyers killed the case, ensuring decades of race-based politics. When Congress refused to stem the tide of illegal aliens, the ACLU and MALDEF sued to bar grassroots initiatives from protecting taxpayers.
In Warriors for the West: Fighting Bureaucrats, Radical Groups, and Liberal Judges on America’s Frontier, William Perry Pendley puts human faces on westerners’ historic and often precedentsetting fights against:
- Environmental laws
- “Lying and cheating” bureaucrats and their
ethically challenged lawyers
- Clinton’s attacks on logging, mining, and
energy exploration
- Government as a bullying bad neighbor
- Criminalizing everything for “environmental
protection”
- Seizure of “private property” for “public
use” without “just compensation”
- And much,much more
No one escapes Pendley’s well-documented truth telling. All are held accountable: Congress, bureaucrats, extremist groups, and activist judges.
