The Wit and Wisdom of Ronald Reagan

by James C. Humes

Regnery Publishing, Inc.; ISBN: 1596980451

Hardcover - 222 pages (October 2007)

From Hollywood to the White House, the “Great Communicator’s” Great Words Ronald Reagan is more than a revered and popular president––he is a hero to millions, beloved as a persuasive leader who inspired America and shaped the future more than any other modern president. In a heart-warming new book, The Wit and Wisdom of Ronald Reagan, presidential speech writer and renowned author James C. Humes captures Reagan’s warmth, intelligence, and sense of humor as only an insider can. Spanning never-before-published anecdotes, zingers, and little-known stories, this must-read compilation also includes commentary about Reagan from friends and foes, analysis of his great speeches, and entertaining stories from Reagan’s years in Hollywood and as governor of California.

Some of the most memorable anecdotes and zingers include:

  • “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
This famous line was delivered in a speech in West Berlin. It had been cut by the State Department in favor of a more moderate message; Reagan said it anyway.
  • The Preacher and the Crooner
Reagan would always order a pot of hot water and two big chocolate chip cookies before big speeches––advice, he said, from “an old preacher and crooner.” They were Billy Graham and Frank Sinatra.
  • Hot Enough for You?
One of Reagan’s favorite stories was about the shortest sermon he ever heard, in Dixon, Illinois, on a hot August Sunday. When the preacher stepped up to the pulpit, he simply pointed down and said, “It’s hotter down there.” And that was it.

The Wit & Wisdom of Ronald Reagan is an exceptional tribute to America’s adored fortieth president.
