Dean
of Cornell Medical School says Doctors Must Educate
Patients
For
most of America, a visit to the doctor equals
15 to 45 minutes in the waiting room and another
10 to 15 minutes in the examination room. In the
end, with the demands of HMOs and insurance companies,
were lucky to get one to three minutes of
face time with our physicians. We better have
the right questions, the right insights, and the
right knowledge ahead of time.
Dr. Antonio Gotto Jr., Dean of the prestigious
Weill Medical College of Cornell University and
one of the worlds foremost cardiologists
is changing all that. As part of his campaign
to help patients help themselves, Dr. Gotto has
spearheaded a major new initiative at Weill Medical
College, producing a brand new CORNELL ILLUSTRATED
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HEALTH (LifeLine Press; ISBN:
0-89526-186-3; $45.00) that seeks to translate
doctor-speak into everyday, common sense language
that the average person can understand and put
to use.
According
to Dr. Gotto, THE CORNELL ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA
OF HEALTH makes a dramatic impact on our health
care system by:
- Showing
parents when its necessary to seek emergency
medical care and which symptoms to be aware
of. The problem of knowing when to see a
doctor is paramount.
- Giving
critical new information. Here, youll
find the latest on the countrys leading
causes of disease and discomfort, from cancer,
heart attack, and diabetes, to asthma and allergies,
including early detection
- Procedures,
test and surgeries. The ENCYCLOPEDIA
gives a patient concise and easy to understand
information on common and special procedures,
from angioplasty to dozens of surgeries. This
kind of stress reduction has been shown to speed
healing and recuperation, says Dr. Gotto.
- Decision
making. Its critical for patients
and parents to assess treatment options for
themselves and their children, to do it knowledgably
and with a rational and informed mind.
- Lets
put doctors and patients on a more even playing
field, says Dr. Gotto. Lets
make them co-partners in their health care.
Study after study has shown this approach gets
the best long-term results.
Dr.
Gotto is one of the countrys foremost authorities.
Among his many awards and honors is the Gold Heart
Award of the American Heart Association, and he
is past National President of the American Heart
Association. He is also a member of the National
Heart, Lung and Blood Advisory Council and the
National Diabetes Advisory Board and Institute
of Medicine.
