Forget Everything You Thought You Knew About Aging

Doctor David Exposes the Dangerous Myths about “Growing Old”

“Virtually everything we have been taught about getting older is completely wrong.” so says Doctor Lipschitz, affectionately known as “Doctor David” to thousands of patients who have sought his rather unconventional approach to aging. “Once you see a grandmother on a Harley, you can’t really think about getting older in quite the same way,” says Doctor David in his book BREAKING THE RULES OF AGING (LifeLine Press; October 21, 2002; ISBN: 0-89526-121-9; $24.95). “In truth, it’s my patients who have convinced me that our assumptions about old age - namely illness, fragility, senility - are complete hogwash.” Baby boomers are turning to Doctor David in droves for advice on how to age with health, vitality and sharpness of mind. What they’re finding out is that we have all been sold a bill of goods about aging. Just because we’re getting older doesn’t mean we have to be senile, sick and slow.

Director of the renowned Reynolds Center on Aging and host of the award-winning PBS series Aging Successfully with Doctor David, Doctor David explodes some of the very common myths on aging, including:

  • Thinner is better. Wrong! Losing weight is the worst thing for older adults. A little extra weight is better despite studies showing that a thin physique increases longevity.
  • Sex drive decreases with age and is harmful to those over 70. False! Not only do 70% of seniors says their sex lives are better now than in their 40’s, it also turns out that men who had sex twice a week were 3 times less likely to have a heart attack than those who had sex once a month. The more you have, the healthier you are likely to be.
  • Stress tests prevent heart attacks. No! In fact, 50% of heart attacks are caused by blood vessels that appeared “normal” during an angiogram.
  • Most people over 60 need a lot of medication. According to Dr. David, not only are patients taking too many drugs but the majority are also mixing them with over-the-counter drugs - and the combination can be deadly.

Dubbed “the Dr. Spock on Aging,” by Bob Butler, Director of the National Institute on Aging, Doctor David is frequently listed as one of the “Best Doctors in America.” His award-winning PBS series has aired on over 300 stations across the country. Doctor David is also the Head of Geriatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, recently listed as one of the top 10 programs by US News and World Report.
