Port in the Storm
How to Make a Medical Decision and Live to Tell About It
by Cole A. Giller, MD, PhD

Go Beyond Words

Let’s say you’ve broken your leg, and your doctor is explaining different types of treatment. You can chose to have an option called an FPF (femur preserving fusion), which works most of the time but has a long recovery. Or you can choose a sarcogenic transplant, which takes less time but doesn’t work quite as often. Or you can decide against surgery, and let your leg heal in a Holcomb semirigid brace.

Without reading any further (no peeking!), which of these options would you choose?

If you chose any of these options, you will be interested to learn that none of them really exists. As far as I know, there is no such thing as an FPF, a sarcogenic transplant, or a Holcomb semirigid brace. They are all completely made up, and yet you were willing to choose one as your treatment.

Make sure you know what your real choices are — and that you understand them fully — before you step off the cliff.
