BILL GERTZS THE CHINA THREAT
IN BOOKSTORES
Gertz
Reveals:
CLINTON ADMINISTRATION BOTCHED WEN HO LEE SPY
CASE
In
his chilling new book, The China Threat,
New York Times best-selling author Bill
Gertz uncovers incredible evidence against suspected
Chinese spy Wen Ho Lee
Washington
DC: The China Threat details, among other
things, how the Clinton Administration and the
U.S. Justice Department, through incompetence
or collusion with the Chinese government, botched
numerous Chinese espionage investigations of suspected
spies Wen Ho Lee, Gwo Bao Min and Peter Lee.
In
frightening details, Gertz highlights key evidence
against Wen Ho Lee that substantiates Lees
allegiance to China. In the early 1990s,
Lee, working as a scientist at the Los Alamos
Lab, unexpectedly arrived at a private gathering
of visiting Chinese scientists in New Mexico.
Even though Lee was not invited to the meeting,
Hu Side, known to U.S. Intelligence as the father
of Chinas nuclear weapons program, enthusiastically
welcomed Lee. In what will infamously go down
in history as the hug, Hu Side hugged
and thanked Lee for his important contributions
to Chinas nuclear weapons program.
Unknown to Lee and Hu Side, an informant saw the
hug and passed the information over to the
FBI.
Mr.
Gertz also details how the U.S. let one of China's
first major nuclear spies go free from prosecution.
In the early 1980s, Gwo Bao Min, a man fired
from his job at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
and under intense suspension of passing nuclear
weapons secrets to China, became the key target
of an FBI counterspy case known as Tiger
Trap. Min was suspected of giving China
the keys to unlocking Americas nuclear weapons
arsenal. Ironically enough, during the investigation,
Min accepted a personal phone call from none other
than Wen Ho Lee. According to FBI wiretaps, Lee
promised Min that he would investigate and expose
informants that had turned Min in to authorities.
According to Gertz, Mins work may have been
more damaging to U.S. national security than the
Rosenbergs, yet he was never prosecuted.
Additionally,
The China Threat exposes new developments
in the Peter Lee spy case. Specifically, how White
House officials ordered the FBI to delay the arrest
of accused Lee, so not to offend visiting Chinese
President Jiang Zemin. In addition, China secretly
warned the United States that an aggressive prosecution
of Peter Lee would greatly upset U.S.-China relations.
Lee was suspected of giving China vital U.S. submarine
and nuclear secrets.
Gertz
is the defense and national security reporter
for The Washington Times and one of the
most respected reporters in his field and has
unrivaled access to sources within the Pentagon
and the American Intelligence community.
